Projects
The objectives of the Grapevine Garden Club are to promote an interest in flowers and gardening; to further the protection and conservation of wild flowers and trees; to stimulate an appreciation and protection of birds; to support environmental concerns and to encourage education in all these areas. The following projects help to support and achieve these goals.
Annual Plant Sale
Each spring the Grapevine Garden Club sponsors a community plant sale to benefit the Club's scholarship program and community beautification projects. Many of the native plants are grown and donated to the plant sale from member's gardens.
Ed and Edith Pewitt Education Center
The Ed and Edith Pewitt Education Center is a permanent outdoor teaching center and gathering place for tours and special events within the Grapevine Botanical Garden. It provides a place where educators and group leaders teach children and adults to appreciate and love nature. Classes began in Spring, 2008.
Teaching Trees
In 2002 the Grapevine Garden Club initiated a program to distribute trees to third graders in the Grapevine/Colleyville ISD. The program was designed to teach the joys of planting and caring for a tree as well as the value of trees in our lives and nature. It started with 200 trees and two schools and quickly blossomed into 500 trees and five schools per year. It is now a yearly event in the spirit of Arbor Day. As of 2006, more than 1,700 Eastern Redbud trees have been distributed as gifts from the Grapevine Garden Club.
Butterfly Flutterby
The Grapevine Garden Club assists the City of Grapevine with the annual butterfly festival and parade. Members share information about butterflies with the children and their parents.
Earthkind™ Rose Trial Garden
The Grapevine Garden Club and the Grapevine Parks and Recreation Department have joined with Texas A&M Research Center to field test over thirty varieties of antique roses. The goal of the field test is to identify rose varieties with a high degree of disease and insect resistance and to combine the best organic and traditional gardening and landscaping principles. The roses are not sprayed, deadheaded or fertilized anytime during the field test. Over the three year test period, garden club members regularly collect and report data to the Texas A&M Research Center. The data from the Grapevine Rose Trial Garden is then combined with other clubs and organizations involved in the EarthKind™ research project. Eventually the best rose varieties will be awarded the EarthKind™ designation.
Scholarship
The Grapevine Garden Club scholarship was created to financially assist and encourage students enrolled in the study of horticulture or other related fields. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior residing in Grapevine or attending Grapevine - Colleyville ISD high school or to a full time college student who resides in Grapevine, Texas and is currently enrolled in any college offering horticulture related studies. Grapevine Botanical Garden Docents
The Grapevine Garden Club cordially invites you to visit the Grapevine Botanical Gardens located in Heritage Park, 411 Ball Street in Grapevine. The gardens include several water features, native and perennial plants and trees, a butterfly and herb garden plus a bird sanctuary. Grapevine club members serve as docents. Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker
Grapevine Garden Club members proudly dedicated a Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker on November 10, 2006. Invited guests included National Garden Club Past President, Mary Louise Michie and NGC Award Chairman Barbara Baker, Garden Club Council President, Becky Meadows, Vietnam Veteran Capt. Bruce W. Rider, USAFR (Ret.), American Legion Honor Guard, Post #379, Euless, Grapevine City Council members, Grapevine City managers, Grapevine Parks and Recreation staff as well as many Garden Club members. The Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker is dedicated in honor of all who have served, are serving and will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. There are approximately sixty-three markers in the State of Texas. The Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker is located in the traffic median at the intersection of Ball Street and Wall Street in Grapevine.
